Forensic Medical Examiner (FME)

Location – Cumbria region

The role is based from home and you will be expected to attend custody suites within your designated areas and bordering counties

Salary - £75,000 + plus mileage expenses + G4S will contribute towards your annual indemnity insurance (to a maximum £7,000 per annum)

Shift: 48 hours - On call, 2 days on, 2 nights on, 4 off

This post will involve flexible working across a 24-hour shift rota (days, evenings and night shifts) in a 7 day a week service. You will be required to have access to private transport. About the role

There are many important aspects of a FME’s day to day role. A typical day will involve triaging calls to ascertain the level of care required for patients across your area. This will involve liaising with the call centre and custody Health Care Professionals who may already be on site in custody.

You may also be required to attend locations yourself for face to face assessments.
 
As an FME you will be responsible for covering calls relating specifically to the Road Traffic Act, mental health assessments, sudden and suspicious deaths and sexual offence cases. These may require attendance at a Police Custody, Hospital or any other location.

The assessments we carry out vary dependant on the nature of the call. The priority is to ensure the safety, wellbeing and ongoing care of any persons detained in police custody which require medical intervention.

This role will require the ability to take blood samples.

Contemporaneous note making is essential in the process to ensure that, should you be require to attend court, you have sufficient notes to back your case.

Being a FME is a challenging role. You need to be able to work autonomously and have the clinical skills and confidence required to support HCP’s, advise custody staff and undertake assessments.

You will be dealing with a variety of people who on occasions have very complex medical or mental health needs.

You will need to be able to assess, plan and implement care required for individuals, sometimes with minimal information.

Experience in the following is desirable:

  • Emergency Medicine
  • Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • Psychiatry
  • General Practice

This role requires use of your own car, business use insurance and your own professional indemnity insurance.
