"HMP/YOI Low Newton is an all female closed prison situated in a semi-rural location 4 miles North East of Historic Durham City. It caters for females aged 18 and over who are on remand, as well as sentenced female prisoners  who are 18 or over; the prison takes all categories of prisoners including those serving life sentences . HMP/ YOI Low Newton has an operational capacity of 348 and serves the courts in the catchment area from the Scottish Borders to North Yorkshire across to North Cumbria.

A full range of Primary Care Services and preventative services are provided to the women who are held at Low Newton. The team works closely with GPs, the Integrated Mental Health Team, Drug and Alcohol Services, dental services, opticians, podiatrists, physiotherapists, sexual health services, and Prison Staff to ensure that the health and wellbeing of the prison population are met.  In addition HMP/YOI Low Newton has an inpatient unit, as well as a Substance Misuse Unit .

Job Outline:

  • To work across the North East Cluster of Prisons seeing clients at risk of and / or diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection and/ or a Blood Borne Virus for assessment, treatment (or referral for) information, health education and harm minimisation. 
  • Provide pre and post test discussion for blood borne viruses.   
  • To see clients in the prison GUM setting for crisis intervention and time limited counselling.   
  • To take on project work as negotiated with the Health Promotion / Sexual Health Specialist – Prisons. 
  • The post holder will be required to work as part of a multidisciplinary health care team under the clinical supervision of a GUM and CASH Consultant.

 

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities 

  • To be an integral part of the prison sexual health team and  provide and develop tier two [nurse led] GUM and CASH services across the North East Cluster of Prisons which will include providing smear clinics and supporting the colposcopy services within the female prison.  
  • Provide information and health education for clients diagnosed with sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. 
  • Develop specialist programmes of care/care packages 
  • To liaise with the appropriate authorities to facilitate partner notification/management/referral to GUM clinic. 
  • Ensure at all times that the client’s identity and the confidential nature of  the information obtained is respected in accordance with the Sexually Transmitted Disease Regulations of 1974 and the NHS VD directive of 1991. 
  • Recall clients with untreated infections or those in need of follow-up and treat appropriately.  To exchange relevant information about clients and contacts with other GUM clinics where necessary and using approved protocols. 
  • Provide initial crisis intervention, counselling and appropriate referral for those clients attending the clinic with relevant problems, e.g. termination of pregnancy, sexual identity, sexual assault, substance misuse and sexual dysfunction.  
  • Offer information and support and deal with enquiries from health professionals about Sexually Transmitted Infections, including HIV and AIDS. 
  • Provide HIV pre-test discussion for clients requesting an HIV test to act as an information resource on HIV and other tests for colleagues within and occasionally out with the prison environment. 
  • To engage with and develop the risk assessment process for PEP. 
  • To perform Phlebotomy. 
  • To input client data on System 1 or whichever clinical IT System is currently in place 
  • Maintain accurate statistics and record action in the client’s medical records. 
  • To carry out appropriate audit.
  • To keep abreast of the latest research, procedures and treatments pertaining to STI’s including HIV and AIDS.  To attend conferences, seminars and workshops for professional education and widening knowledge. To use this knowledge to develop the service.
  • Attend regular clinical and managerial supervision sessions.
  • To develop and maintain effective communication and liaison with medical, nursing and paramedical members of staff and working in close co-operation for the benefit of patients in order to improve services at the Clinic and STI services in general. 
  • Be conversant with related health, social, welfare, counselling and education services in the area and to liaise as necessary with statutory and voluntary services. 
  • Attend multidisciplinary meetings as required with other related health professionals. 
  • The post holder should be aware at all times that he/she is representing the sexual health team when attending meetings and when giving educational talks. 
  • Undertake any other associated duties which may be reasonably requested by the Health Promotion/ Sexual Health Specialist Nurse such as working flexible hours and working across the North East Cluster of prisons. 
  • To participate in mentorship of nursing students.  
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of specialist related policies 
  • Due to the specialist nature of this service, a non-judgemental and positive attitude is necessary. 
  • Maintain stock control of specialist equipment
  • Comply with the Company Appraisal system and attend an appraisal every year.
  • Ensure updated mandatory training requirements are met.
  • To maintain standards of infection control within the (ward, theatre, etc.) area and during clinical care and to assist patients to maintain their own infection control needs.

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Skills: 

  • 1st level RGN with current registration with the UK Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC).
  • Evidence of Continuous Professional Development (CPD).

Desirable Skills:

  • ENB 998 or equivalent
  • Diploma/Degree in Substance Misuse or equivalent
