An opportunity has arisen within the Learning and Skills department based at HMP & YOI Parc for a Peer Partner Mentor /ESW teacher. Within this exciting and challenging role you will be responsible for the delivery and assessment of courses to offenders throughout the establishment for both the peer partner course and Literacy and Numeracy from Level 2 upwards. Responsibility for ensuing that students who provide support in a learning environment and across the prison estate in a manner of different roles   are adequately trained and qualified to carry out the task.  The main objective is for the Peer Partners/ESW post is  to be competent to work alongside staff members and offenders  assisting with the training requirements and improvement in their Literacy and Numeracy skills in order for them to take up either mentoring roles in classrooms or posts across the prison in in with the new government agenda  from  wing to work where offenders need to be paralleling  employment in all areas for readiness to work in the real work . Peer Partners are generally expected to serve as role models to other offenders and this must be be high on our  agenda when training  and recommending.

Role Purpose and Responsibilities;

  • You will be expected to train students on a range of courses related to the role of a Peer Partner
  • To ensure that the programme of learning is appropriate for the needs of the learner,
  • To deliver assessment and accreditation relevant to the requirements of the awarding body and trainee including the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of courses.
  • To monitor and track the progress of the mentor learner according to the requirements of the awarding body and the prison and keep an individual learning plan for each learner.
  • You will liaise with the IAG Coordinator and the Occupational Reintegration Coordinator to create a data base of all occupations current to the prisoner on receptions assisting  with  to placing  them in the correct roles across the prison
  • You will be expected to deliver Literacy and Numeracy tuition at levels 2 and 3 of the curriculum.
  • To contribute to the curriculum development in the area of Literacy & Numeracy this will include the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of courses.
  • To monitor and track the progress of the learner according to the requirements of the awarding body and the prison.
  • To keep an individual learning plan for each learner.
  • To take responsibility for the management of the classroom, paying particular regard to the security of tools, including computer equipment and curriculum equipment as appropriate.
  • To undertake all administrative duties related to the monitoring and review systems of the learning skills programme and the prison regime. Which will include the searching of prisoners
  • To ensure that all preparation, marking, assessment and moderation is completed promptly and efficiently within agreed timescales.
  • To attend meetings and working groups as required for the peer mentors and other relevant staff and agencies.
  • To operate effective arrangements for monitoring and working towards 100% attendance and retention, including necessary follow-up actions.
  • To prepare, review and update regularly, curricular and associated training schemes and materials and to have them available for observations as required.
  • To assist students in reaching their long term aims, employability, career progression, further education and training and / or to live as independently as possible.
  • Train on a range of programmes in relevant subject areas.
  • Assess students’ progress regularly including the timely marking of work and giving feedback both written and oral.
  • Carry out student questionnaires and elicit feedback on the quality of training and learning.
  • Contribute to course reviews and the setting, implementation and monitoring of action plans.
  • The ability to relate and motivate students from a variety of backgrounds and employ effective training strategies.
  • You will be expected to update your skills on a regular basis and participate in staff development activities and relevant internal and external training events.
  • To attend meetings of education, vocational teams and other working groups, as appropriate.
  • To implement appropriate Health & Safety policies.
  • To undertake other reasonable duties from time to time, as required by the Head of Learning and Skills.

The Ideal Candidate

Education:

  • Qualified Teacher Status or PGCE
  • Relevant  Qualifications
  • Professional experience and subject specific degree

 

Experience:

  • Experience of working with adults  adult offenders and or adults experiencing behavioural problems. 
  • Experience in a Prison environment - desirable.
