The Chaplaincy team at HMP Parc is one of the largest in the country and we are committed to continually improve and enhance the care we provide to prisoners and staff alike.  We are looking for Chaplains to join the Team who will bring new ideas and understandings; who will challenge our current working practises, who are not afraid to offer solutions and different ways of working; and who will work together with the team to drive forward and meet the challenges of working in a complex and busy prison environment. 
 
Summary
 
  • The Chaplain will provide for the religious care of prisoners and staff in their own tradition, and appropriate pastoral care for all, irrespective of faith or tradition.
  • The Chaplain will work with colleagues to ensure that the delivery of the specification “Faith and Pastoral Care” and also the broader work of chaplaincy in delivering faith and non-faith based courses.
  • The Chaplain will engage with, and build contacts with their own faith community towards aiding the resettlement of offenders.
  • This is a non-operational role with no line management or supervisory responsibilities.
 
Key Responsibilities
 
Act as a faith advisor in the establishment providing advice, pastoral care and spiritual welfare to prisoners, staff and their families as requested
Be part of the provision of an available and accessible chaplaincy care at all times
Pastoral care of prisoners, including interviewing new Receptions, Discharges, visiting those located in the Safer Custody Unit and those segregated under prison rules 
Responding to prisoner applications and offering ministry to the suicidal and the bereaved, actively supporting the Assessment, Care in Custody and Teamwork (ACCT) process
Facilitate and deliver opportunities for worship, study and  teaching in accordance with your faith tradition
Plan and lead worship and prayer / faith specific meetings
Group instruction and provision of offending behaviour programmes using a variety of media e.g. music, information technology etc
Acquire and distribute appropriate religious literature, supplies and materials 
Creation of opportunities for faith sharing (not proselytising) and organising special events.
Facilitate services provided by contractors and volunteers
Work collaboratively with other Chaplains and the Managing Chaplain on the maintenance and provision of facilities for worship and prayer
Ensure your prison community is aware of relevant religious events and coordinate establishment support of these
Nurturing Chaplaincy volunteers in their contribution
Provide mentoring and personal support for other chaplains and volunteers including following incidents
Be proactive in forging links with their local faith communities and other agencies, as relevant, and consider ways in which their local faith communities and other agencies, may become involved in mentoring prisoners on release
Facilitating visits by local Faith Representatives to see prisoners of their own faith
Keeping accurate administrative records in accordance with G4S prison requirements and Prison Service directives.
Maintaining a Chaplains Journal of duties performed and actions taken
Advising the Prison Director and Senior Management Team and representing Chaplaincy on management groups as required
Contributing to achieving an acceptable or better rating in any Religion audit
Developing a role within the total life of the prison promoting moral and spiritual values in accordance with your faith
Attendance of training events and conferences as arranged by the prison 
Contributing to Employee Induction on the work of the Chaplaincy at the establishment
Provide appropriate support to the establishment in the absence of the Managing Chaplain.
Take responsibility for your own spiritual health and development, allowing time for private prayer, study and retreat.

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Skills/Qualifications/Accreditation/Registration:
 
  • Anglican – Ordained priest, with formal endorsement in the form of the Licence of the Diocesan Bishop.
  • Licensed Reader, (Religious sister or brother, Church Army Officer or other appropriately qualifies or licensed minister in the Anglican Tradition) subject to agreement from Anglican Bishop to Prisons. Have formal endorsement in the form of the Licence of the Diocesan Bishop.
  • Roman Catholic – Ordained Priest with formal endorsement in the form of recognition from the appropriate Diocesan Bishop or Religious Superior, and formal agreement to work in specific Dioceses by the local Diocesan Bishop.
  • Permanent Deacon, Religious brother or sister or a suitably qualified lay person of the Roman Catholic Church. Formal endorsement in the form of recognition from the appropriate Diocesan Bishop or Religious Superior
  • Orthodox – Ordained priest, formal endorsement in the form of the certificate of Ordination of a Bishop, Metropolitan or Patriach.
  • Ordained Deacon, Subdeacon, Reader or monastic or be qualified by the Bishop for this ministry, formal endorsement in the form of the certificate of Ordination of a Bishop, Metropolitan or Patriach
  • Free Church – Ordained (or denominationally equivalent) minister of a free church denomination / church grouping which is either a member of the Free Churches Group, Churches Together in England or Churches Together in Wales. For eligibility to work as a Free Church Chaplain visit here
