We’re bigger, more diverse and involved in more fascinating, cutting-edge projects than many people would imagine and we now have an opportunity for a Music Teacher to join our team at HMP & YOI Parc, a category B prison, in Bridgend, South Wales, currently holding over 1600 convicted male adult prisoners and remand / convicted young offenders and young people in a secure but modern environment.

A vacancy has arisen for a Music Teacher based at HMP & YOI Parc working with young offenders. Reporting to the Head of YPU Education Young Persons Curriculum Manager, the successful applicant will have a passion for music with a positive and creative attitude towards teaching 15 to 17 yr olds in a challenging environment within the Learning & Skills department.

Responsibilities: 

  • You will be expected to train young people on a range of courses related to Music including electronic/computer based software such as Garageband, Logic, Reason and Protools.
  • You will also be required to teach a variety of instruments including guitar, keyboard and drums.
  • To contribute to the curriculum development in the area of Creative Arts - which will include the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of courses.
  • To assist learners in reaching their long term aims, employability, career progression, further education and training and / or to live as independently as possible.
  • Contribute to course reviews and the setting, implementation and monitoring of action plans.
  • The ability to relate and motivate learners from a variety of backgrounds and employ effective training strategies.
  • To take responsibility for the management of the classroom, paying particular regard to the security of tools, including computer equipment and instruments.
  • To ensure efficient and effective operation and deployment of resources within your care.
  • To be responsible for the monitoring and performance of your learners.
  • To keep an individual learning plan for each learner.
  • To ensure the programme of learning is appropriate for the needs of the learner.
  • To monitor and track learner progress according to the requirements of the awarding body and the Prison.
  • To operate effective arrangements for monitoring attendance and retention, including necessary follow-up actions.
  • To ensure that all preparation, marking, assessment and moderation is completed promptly and efficiently within agreed timescales.
  • To attend meetings of education, vocational teams and other working groups, as appropriate.
  • You will be expected to update your skills  and participate in staff development activities.
  • To undertake other reasonable duties from time to time, as required by the Young Persona Curriculum Manager and Head of Learning and Skills.
  • To undertake all administrative duties related to the monitoring and review systems of the Learning and Skills programme and the prison regime.
  • To implement appropriate Health and Safety policies.
  • To prepare, review and update regularly, curricular and associated training schemes and materials and also have them available for observations as required.

The Ideal Candidate

Formal Education:      

Relevant professional experience and subject specific qualifications

PGCE or equivalent required

Experience:                 

Experience of working with young people experiencing behavioural problems. 

Experience in a Prison environment.

You must be eligible to work in the UK and must have been resident in the UK for a minimum period of 5 years. You will also need to provide full details of your employment and education history for the last 10 years as part of the security screening process for this role.
