Oakhill Secure Training Centre, Milton Keynes

At Oakhill Secure Training Centre, Milton Keynes, we look after young people aged 12 to 18 years old who have been remanded or sentenced to periods of detention. The vulnerable young people in our care can be challenging with a complex range of social and emotional needs. This is an environment that calls for high standards of social care and service delivery to provide a secure and stable environment for young people to develop their life skills, address the behaviours that have led them into custody and effectively re-integrate them into mainstream society on release. We are particularly committed to improving young people’s educational achievement as we see this as key to successful reintegration and life opportunities.

Whatever job you do now, you may have the skills to change your career. That is what many of our Secure Care Officers (SCO’s) have done. All you need is commitment to do the right thing and the ability to build rapport with just about anyone.

Working directly with the young people, you will need to be able to motivate and support them on the residential units and in the classroom to develop life skills, manage their own behaviour and enhance their effective resettlement on release. This role requires the ability to set boundaries, maintain a consistently mature approach and manage the behaviour of people in our care with professional authority, dignity and respect. The role can be very challenging yet extremely rewarding. The ideal candidate will be a natural communicator, with excellent interpersonal skills including problem solving and conflict resolution. You will have the ability to apply your life experience and we are therefore looking for resilient, mature candidates who are able to role model positive and proactive behaviours.

At G4S, we invest heavily in our people.  If you join us you’ll attend our comprehensive training programme to equip you with the skills and knowledge for the job. As well as ongoing support and development opportunities we offer a corporate discount scheme, company pension, life assurance, childcare vouchers, free onsite parking and the chance to do an extraordinary job – every day.

Role and responsibilities:

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting and caring for young people to provide a stable and secure educational and residential environment which promotes anti-offending behaviour
  • Demonstrating the value of academic and vocational education to encourage skills and behavioural development to support resettlement on release
  • Building mutual trust and respect with the young people so that they respond positively and appropriately to information and guidance
  • Defining structures and boundaries, and role-modelling positive behaviours, to set clear expectations of the young people in our care
  • Monitoring and managing the behaviour of the young people to minimise incidents and improve standards of behaviour
  • Effectively maintaining a professional response to challenging and difficult behaviours
