The Prison is the UK’s first purpose-built resettlement Prison, a one of a kind new generation category C Prison for the future that is becoming an integral part of the local community.
G4S Care & Rehabilitation Services (CaRS) successfully manages 5 prisons, one secure training centre and a number of community contracts in England and Wales. The philosophy of our prisons is to rehabilitate offenders and equip them to re-integrate into mainstream society on release. We seek to normalise prison conditions as far as possible to reflect life in the outside community. Our aim is to create an environment in which staff and prisoners feel safe.
We are now looking for an experienced Manager, with Prison or Custodial experience, to enure that all the residential functions are in compliance with the prison service requirements and related inspections such as HMIP etc.at HMP Five Wells. To succeed in this role, you will be a dynamic and engaging individual, who shares our ethics and values. You must deliver an exceptional service and can be flexible in working in diverse functions within the prison. You will also need to have excellent communication skills and be able to motivate and empower officers to deliver outstanding results. A proven operational manager, you will inspire your team and have the ability to win hearts and minds.
In this role, you will manage the efficient and effective operation of allocated functional areas or residential units and we expect you to create a positive and diverse working environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure compliance with performance monitoring and KPTs in areas of responsibility, to include serious assaults, doubling, time unlocked.
- Ensuring that all operational policies and procedures meet contractual compliance
- All prison service instructions are implemented and audited to promote a safe, secure and decent environment for all prisoners and staff
- Implement any action plans arising from internal and external audits in a timely manner
- Direct line management of unit/function to include all aspects of performance management and development of strategies through bi-monthly meetings
- Ensure Operational Manager conducts monthly supervision with direct line reports.
- Monitor and liaise with the unit/function Operations Manager regarding day to day issues and routines.
- Develop direct reports through supporting FLMs through any management development programmes.
- Attend PEC, EAT, H&S, SIM, Security & other meetings as required to ensure the residential function is represented and up to date with current practices and legislation.
- Ensure and assist with the continual assurance with the IPF Policy, decency and basic strategy & monitor compliance.
- Monitor & provide assurance on stock levels to ensure continued high levels of decency through the establishments is maintained.
- Ensure effective management of unit/function staff, to include annual staff appraisals, performance management of staff and monitoring of probation periods, and staff development through progression of NVQ’S / apprenticeships and compliance with mandatory training.
- Ensure strong working relationships with activities and offender management to promote resettlement opportunities
- Attend the security committee meeting as a member each month and promote security and safe working practices in areas of responsibility
- Actively promote and ensure compliance with safer custody and violence reduction, conducting and contributing to case conferences and encouraging family liaison.
- Ensuring the implementation of internal and external audit reports.
- Undertake adjudications and Duty Director Duties as required.
- Manage the prisoner engagement agenda to ensure regular meeting are held with prisoners and all other relevant stakeholders within the establishment in order to address any actions and provide innovative and practical solutions.
- Assist in the promotion of creating a positive Health & Safety culture across the site leading by example, this includes reporting accidents and near misses in a timely manner & follow the applicable safe systems of work for the role.

The Ideal Candidate
Essential Skills:
- Proven managerial experience.
- High level of resilience.
- Experience of managing & supporting people & dealing with HR people issues.
- Evidence of being a strong team player.
- Previous experience as a PCO & C&R trained.
- Experience of ACCT & CSIP.
Desirable Skills:
- Knowledge of the Justice Service.
- Residential experience
The successful candidate will need to evidence operational excellence within a secure environment, an understanding of contractual compliance, as well as successfully managing a team
